I preached on Zechariah 9:9-17 today.  The first verse of the passage speaks of the coming of Israel’s king!  “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9, ESV).

This verse referring to Christ’s first coming speaks of HIs righteousness, redemption, humility and peace-loving character.

David Baron, who has written one of the most respected commentaries on Zechariah sums it up well:

Christ is the only person in all history whose character and experience answer to the description of the ideal king in this prophecy.  He alone, among the sons of men, can be described as the true Tsaddiq–the Righteous One, who did not violence, nor was deceit found in his mouth. . . .The Lord Jesus Christ for us men and our salvation also became ‘poor’ and ‘afflicted’–so poor that he himself could say:  ‘The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to lay his head.’ And of him alone also is it true that he is endowed with and is the bringer of salvation because He was himself ‘saved’ or ‘delivered’ or ‘made victorious’ . . . .in the great conflict which he came to wage on our behalf with the powers of darkness.

This prophecy was intended to introduce, in contrast to earthly warfare and kingly triumph, another Kingdom, of which the Just King would be the Prince of Peace, who was meek and lowly in His Advent, who would speak peace to the heathen, and whose sway would yet extend to earth’s utmost bounds. . . .If ever was a true picture of the Messiah-King and His kingdom, it is this:  and if ever Israel was to have a Messiah, or the world a Savior, He must be such as is described in this prophecy–not merely in the letter, but in the spirit of it.”

“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14, ESV).

Here is a divine strategy for living through the storms of our lives and for living strategically till Jesus comes again!

“The One [the King] on whom we wait is a dissatisfied Messiah. He will not relent, he will not quit, he will not rest until ever promise he has made been fully delivered. He will not turn from his work until every one of his children has been totally transformed. He will continue to fight until the last enemy is under his feet. He will reign until his kingdom has fully come. As long as sin exists, he will shower us with forgiving, empowering, and delivering grace.

He will defend us against attack and attack the enemy on our behalf. He will be faithful to convict, rebuke, encourage, and comfort. He will continue to open the warehouse of his wisdom and unfold for us the glorious mysteries of his truth. He will stand with us through the darkness and the light. He will guide us on a path we could never have discovered or would never have been wise enough to choose. He will supply for us every good thing that we need to be what he’s called us to be and to do what he’s called us to do in the place where he’s put us.

And he will not rest from his work until every last microbe of sin has been completely eradicated from every heart of each of his children!”

Hurricane Ike has been in the news the last several days and the effects of this ravaging storm will be continued to reported for months, maybe even years to come. My hearts go out to each individual and family who have been affected personally by this tragedy.

Without in any way seeking to minimize this great national disaster, there are many other hurricanes that I know of that never make the front page or the lead story on FoxNews.  Here are some that I am aware people face all the time:

  • The death of a loved one
  • Mini-strokes, heart attacks, other serious illness
  • Loss of a job/unending job stress
  • Mental instability/depression/anxiety/worry
  • Rebellious or wayward children
  • Marriage meltdowns and divorce
  • Persecution
  • Financial struggles when inflation keeps rising and your dollar is stretched and will break soon
  • Unbelieving loved ones
  • Anger and discontent, bitterness and unwillingess to forgiveness
  • Facing life alone after the death of a spouse
  • Permanent disability or chronic pain

If you are experiencing any of these today, you can hope!

I have hope today because. . . .

  • I remember “these light momentary afflictions [are] preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,” (2 Corinthians 4:17, ESV).
  • “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18, ESV).
  • I”when Christ who is my life appears, then I also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:4, ESV).
  • God has chosen to make know to me the riches of the glory of his mystery which is  “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27, ESV).

I have hope today because my King is coming again!

A hymn for Lord’s Day Eve

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew
He moved my heart to seek him, seeking me;
It was not that I found, O Savior true;
No, I was found by Thee

Thou didst reach forth Thy hand and mine enfold;
I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea;
‘Twas not so much that I on Thee took hold
As Thou, dear Lord, on me.

I find, I walk, I love, but O the whole
Of  love is but my answer, Lord, to Thee!
For Thou wert long beforehand with my soul;
Always Thou lovedst me.

A great way to grow in your Christian faith is “to walk with wise.”  One easy way to do this is to listen to the biographies of the Christian ‘greats’ in some of the talks given by John Piper. I have heard or read many of these already. I have never been disappointed by any of them, but have been strengthened by God’s grace evident in these imperfect, yet dedicated, Christian men.
