“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. ” (Proverbs 3:11–12, ESV)

A hymn by John Newton that reminds us that often God teaches us as much if not more about prayer and through prayer as we suffer and endure trials.

Prayer Answered by Crosses
By John Newton

I asked the Lord that I might grow
In faith and love and every grace,
Might more of his salvation know,
And seek more earnestly his face.

‘Twas he who taught me thus to pray;
And he, I trust, has answered prayer;
But it has been in such a way
As almost drove me to despair.

I hoped that, in some favoured hour,
At once he’d answer my request,
And by his love’s constraining power
Subdue my sins, and give me rest.

Instead of this, he made me feel
The hidden evils of my heart,
And let the angry powers of hell
Assault my soul in every part.

Yea, more, with his own hand he seemed
Intent to aggravate my woe,
Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
Blasted my gourds, and laid me low.

Lord, why is this? I trembling cried;
Wilt thou pursue this worm to death?
This is the way, the Lord replied
I answer prayer for grace and faith.

These inward trials I now employ
From self and pride to set thee free,
And break thy schemes of earthly joy,
That thou may’st seek thy all in me.

Why are we not more thankful in our lives?

One of our problems is that we so often  focus on what we don’t have yet that we really want that we forget to praise God for what we has already given us that we don’t deserve!  Let me repeat that:  We so often  focus on what we don’t have yet that we really want that we forget to praise God for what we has already given us that we don’t deserve!

A few weeks ago we meditated on Psalm 103 during our midweek Bible study and prayer.  Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and all that is within me praise His holy Name!  Why? He forgives all our sins.  He heals our diseases. He redeems our lives from the pit. He forgives us our sin. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us!  As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has mercy on us all!  And we could go on and on!

Stop focusing on what you don’t have and start thanking God today for what you already have in Christ and all the temporal blessings He has given you in this world.

Prayer is one of the best and most powerful means of helping forward the cause of Christ in the world. It is a means within the reach of all who have the Spirit of adoption. Not all believers have money to give to missions. Very few have great intellectual gifts, or extensive influence among men. But all believers can pray for the success of the Gospel, and they ought to pray for it daily. Many and marvelous are the answers to prayer which are recorded for our learning in the Bible. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16.)
