Praying for missions: USA

Refocusing Our Eyes is initiating a new series of posts called “Missions Monday” in which she is praying for various aspects of missions.  She begins by writing a prayer for America.  What should we pray for our country?  Where do we begin?  The answer may surprise you.

Oh my Father, as I begin this first official day of Missions Monday, my heart is greatly burdened for my own country. Oh Lord, this land that is a place known for its godly heritage, has become, itself, a hedonistic mission field. This land has become corrupt from one end to the other. From the White House to the mission house…it is altogether defiled.

There have been many prayers offered for our nation’s leaders. We even have special days set apart where we specifically intercede for them. But, O Lord, it is not for these leaders which my heart aches, but it is for that which calls itself Your church. O God! What lies are being told in Your name! What sheering of the sheep! What gross negligence and blatant fraud!

Lord, I feel such shame to be part of a nation that broadcasts, not just secular filth to the world, butso-called “Christian Television”.  I pray O God, that you shut the mouths of these false prophets and expose them for who they really are. Tear down the golden idols of prosperity! Bring to shame those who have devoured Your people.

Yet at the same time my Lord, it would be foolish to think you don’t have faithful people in this land. You have brought me into contact with many God-fearing, fervent laborers, for whom I am thankful. It is for these, which I now pray…

For the true Church in America…for the precious Body of Christ, I do now lift before You. O God,equip Your people. Bring light upon Your Word and teach them correct doctrine. Have mercy on Your elect ones and remove them from false churches. O Lord, may the true Body be linked together in perfect unity. Bring wisdom and discernment to Your people in this land. Raise up godly shepherds who will guard the flock entrusted to them and thereby train them in paths of truth.

Lord, I pray that you take Your people, which You have carefully guarded and trained, and sendthem into the harvest fields ~ whether it be at home or abroad. Send people out from us…but also send people to us. O Lord, we need a fire lit underneath us. We need to be stirred to godly jealously. May it be a wake-up call to the church in America that it has become it’s own mission field…even in our churches. O God…our churches. Raise up men like Martin Luther, in every denomination and movement, with a holy fire in their eyes, jealous for the glory of God.

This whole prayer I pray for one reason: that Your wondrous and holy Name  may be proclaimedand glorified in this land. I humbly submit these requests to You, my great God and King.

In the blessed Name of Your Son and our Savior, Lord Jesus Christ. ~Amen.

Gary and Betsy Ricuchi, Love That Lasts: When Marriage Meets Grace (Crossway, 2006), pp. 22-23:

  • Because of the gospel, Christians have become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). Therefore, in our marriage, our past does not define us, confine us, or determine our future.
  • Because of the gospel, we are forgiven (Ephesians 1:7). Therefore we can live free of all guilt and condemnation for every sin, and we can trust that God, in his mercy, will be gracious to us.
  • Because of the gospel, we can forgive, just as Christ forgave us (Ephesians 4:32). Nothing done against us compares to our sin against God. Therefore all offenses, hostility, and bitterness between Christians can be completely forgiven and removed.
  • Because of the gospel, we are accepted by God (Romans 15:7). Therefore we are not dependent on a spouse for who we are or what we need.
  • Because of the gospel, sin’s ruling power over us is broken (Romans 6:614). Therefore we can truly obey all that God calls us to do in our marriage, regardless of any circumstance or situation.
  • Because of the gospel, we have access to God through Christ (Hebrews 4:14-16). Therefore we can at any time take any need in our marriage to the One who can do all things.
  • Because of the gospel, we have hope (Romans 5:1-4). Therefore we can endure any marital difficulty, hardship, or suffering, with the assurance that God is working all to our greatest good (Romans 8:28).
  • Because of the gospel, Christ dwells in us by his Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:13-14). Therefore we are confident that God is always with us and is always at work in our marriage, even when progress is imperceptible (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).
  • Because of the gospel, we have power to fight and overcome remaining sin, which continues to dwell and war within us (Romans 7:19-2124-25Galatians 5:16-17). This indwelling enemy represents the essence of what is called the doctrine of sin.

These are just a few of the ways the gospel can transform a marriage. Sometimes it’s not easy to live in the reality of these truths. But it is always possible—and not because of our strength or determination, but because of God’s empowering and enabling grace.

Anxiety is. . .

Anxiety is gasoline poured on the fire of discontentment!

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. ” (Philippians 4:4–8, ESV)

WAKE UP!

Charles Spurgeon:

Come, brethren and sisters, we must wake up, even if we have been asleep ourselves, and we must do so because we are in an enemy’s country; it will not do to sleep here. This side of heaven we are in every place and at all hours surrounded by foes. What did the Master say? “What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch!” Be like sentries at your post, for otherwise the enemy will soon betray you.

Will you not grieve the Holy Spirit if you are lethargic? Will you not dishonor your Master if you fall asleep? Remember, also, that the devil seeks your destruction, and can never do you so much mischief awake as he can if he finds you sleeping. Let the growling of the old lion arouse you. If nothing else will bestir you, remember the fiery darts of the wicked one. Saul would not have lain so quiet if he had known that Abishai was holding the spear over him, and longing to pin him to the earth: yet this is the condition of professors who are given to slumber. Samson would have scarcely slept on Delilah’s lap if he had foreseen that his hair would be cut, and his eyes put out by the Philistines. Up, then, ye drowsy professors, for the Philistines are upon you!
