The cross and hopelessness

What should be the ultimate lens through which we view life?  Paul Tripp has an excellent post on the place of the cross in our lives–even when life seems hopelessness.  Yes, the cross is more than just about the moment of our conversion. Paul writes,

“There are moments when life, this side of eternity, seems hopeless.

Perhaps there are many more exhausted and overwhelmed people around us than we think. I didn’t seek to comfort my friend by telling him his view of life was inaccurate, but by helping him understand that it was incomplete. I drove home that night deeply thankful for the cross of Jesus Christ.

Perhaps you’re thinking, “The cross? Paul, I thought the cross was about forgiveness and eternal life. What, on that evening, made you thankful for the cross?”

The answer is, that I was hit once again with how the cross of Jesus is the ultimate, most accurate lens on human life. There is nothing that understands, defines, and explains the human struggle like the cross. Let me explain.

“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.” Psalm 27:4

Was there but one thing for holy David to make the object of his desire? Was there but one thing needful? Alas! this poor life of ours, it is a life of necessities. How many things are needful for our bodies? How many things are needful for the decency of our condition? How many things need we for our souls? It is a life of necessities. How, then does he say, ‘One thing have I desired’?

Yes, his meaning is comparatively, I seek for other things in their order and rank, and as they may stand with the main; but, indeed, one thing principally. All the rest will follow. ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all the rest will He cast on you,’ Matthew 6:33. The best way to have all other things is to seek one thing in the first place. Therefore, in heavenly wisdom he says, I desire one thing after an entire manner. That I desire more than anything else.

A pretty fascinating interactive site on what some parts of Tuscaloosa and elsewhere looked like before and after the tornadoes hit a week ago.  Keep praying for those folks so impacted by these hard times.
