I first heard about John R. Rice and read “The Sword of the Lord” when I was a teenager probably. When I went to Bob Jones University there was lots of talk about this man and his fundamentalist newspaper. The thing I remember most about it was all the church ads featuring huge churches with a fleet of buses. I breezed through copies of some of Rice’s book and was not very impressed. I had a roomate one summer while I was doing a church internship who was a big fan of the Sword of the Lord. And some of my own family still read that newspaper.
So I was intrigued when I saw that there was a new book out on Rice and his group of fundamentalist Christians. It’s written by one of his grandsons and it is reviewed by Trevin Wax whose grandparents knew Rice well. If you have any connections in years gone by to the Sword or the Southwide Bible Fellowship, I think you will find this an interesting article and maybe an interesting book.
