Grace to You posts:

“You’re probably aware of the hit movie “Heaven Is for Real” and the popular book it’s based on. Recently, various television news programs have invited John MacArthur to explain why he rejects the story of Colton Burpo’s trip to heaven. But in those brief, edited interviews, much of John’s biblical critique ended up on the cutting-room floor. We thought it would be appropriate to take a short break from our current blog series and explain in more detail why the truth about heaven isn’t found in hallucinations and near-death experiences, but in the Word of God alone. –GTY Staff.”

Read what John writes here. An excerpt:

It may be quite fascinating to read these intricately detailed accounts of people who claim to have come back from heaven, but that hobby is as dangerous as it is seductive. Readers not only get a twisted, unbiblical picture of heaven from these tall tales; they also imbibe a subjective, superstitious, shallow brand of spirituality. There is no reason to believe anyone who claims to have gone to heaven and returned (John 3:131:18). Studying mystical accounts of supposed journeys into the afterlife yields nothing but confusion, contradiction, false hope, bad doctrine, and a host of similar evils.

Here’s just another example of  what happens when teaching and preaching is not rooted in the Word of God.

A snake-handling preacher who was featured on a reality TV show died recently after being bitten by a snake and not seeking medical treatment. Here’s a documentary on this church!

Here’s another sad story of false teaching that lead to unnecessary deaths.  John MacArthur appeared recently on theNancy Grace show in response to the third-degree murder conviction of parents in the death of their infant son.  This was the second of their children to die as a result of believing faith-healing promises of their pastor rather than seeking medical treatment.  John presented the clear biblical case of the role of parents as protectors and exposed the convicted parents’ pastor as culpable for misleading them in a false faith.

Part one of a new interview with John MacArthur was posted at Tim Challies’s website. In the interview, John responds to several questions regarding the Strange Fire conference and Strange Fire book—all of which came directly from readers of Challies’s blog.

Here’s a quick summary of the issues tackled in part one:

  • What was the purpose of the Strange Fire conference, and why weren’t any Reformed continuationists invited to defend their side of the debate?
  • If this is a secondary theological issue, why are you taking such a strong stand? And why does God allow secondary issues to remain unclear to the church?
  • Can you explain the biblical case for cessationism?
  • If Scripture is clear on these issues, how do you explain the continuationist theology of many well-respected pastors and theologians, including some men you would consider friends?
  • What danger does continuationist preaching and practice represent to the church?
  • How do you respond to critics who say you used too broad a brush in your criticism of the charismatic movement?
