Foolishness

“The foolishness of God is wiser than men.” (1 Corinthians 1:25)

“That God would take human form, be crucified, and raised in order to provide for man’s forgiveness of sin and entrance into heaven is an idea far too simple, foolish, and humbling for the natural man to accept. That one man (even the Son of God) could die on a piece of wood on a nondescript hill in a nondescript part of the world and thereby determine the destiny of every person who has ever lived seems stupid. It allows no place for man’s merit, man’s attainment, man’s understanding, or man’s pride…It is moronic, absolute nonsense, to unbelievers who rely on their own wisdom.– John MacArthur

You can hope #2

You can hope because God is in absolute control of our lives.  Nathan Busenitz in Living a Life of Hope lists the following categories  over which God wields absolute authority.

  • God is sovereign over evil, sin, Satan, and demons (Job 1:12; Luke 5:21; 22:31; Revelation 20:10-15)
  • God is sovereign over the governments and militaries of every nation (2 Chronicles 20:6; Psalm 20:7; Proverbs 21:1)
  • God is sovereign over other people and their choices (Exodus 8:15; Proverbs 21:1; Acts 13:48)
  • God is sovereign over our own personal plans (Proverbs 16:9; 19:21; James 4:13-15
  • God is sovereign over nature, including natural disasters (Psalm 50:10; 107:29; Nahum 1:3-6; Matthew 5:45)
  • God is sovereign over sickness and disease (Exodus 15:26; Deuteronomy 32:39; 2 Kings 20:5)
  • God is sovereign over chance and fate (Proverbs 16:33; Job 20:29; 21:17)
  • God is sovereign over everything in the universe (Psalm 115:3; 135:6; Ephesians 1:11)
  • God is sovereign over our own personal plans (Proverbs 16:9; 19:21; James 4:13-15)

You can hope because God is sovereign!
